Drepanidae
65.002 Oak Hook-tip Watsonalla binaria (Hufnagel, 1767)
Common
Similar species: Barred Hook-tip Watsonalla cultraria has the cross-band darker than the rest of the wings and usually only one dark spot within the forewing cross-band (rarely two).
Spiny Hook-tip Watsonalla uncinula has two or three short dark dashes on the outer wing near the hooked tip, rather than a dark suffusion. There are white scales adjacent to the dark mark in the wing-tip rather than a yellow area.
Forewing: 13 to 18mm
Habitats: Oak woodland, parkland, hedgerows and gardens
Habits: The male flies high above oaks during the day. It flies from dusk and both sexes come to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on the upperside of the leaves of Pendunculate Oak, Sessile Oak, occasionally Silver Birch and probably Turkey Oak. It pupates in a tight spun oak leaf.
