Habitats: Damp woodland, marshes, fens, grassland along riverbanks, sheltered ditches and damp rough grassland.
Habits: The moth flies from dusk and comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on bedstraws and sometimes Field Bindweed. In captivity the fresh and withered leaves of Knotgrass, Dandelion, groundsel and dock. It pupates in a cocoon in the leaf litter.
On the European mainland it is reported that it also feeds on trees such as Alder, birches and Aspen.
