Similar species: Balsam Carpet Xanthorhoe biriviata is smaller (12 to 14mm) and has blue-grey markings in the forewing band. Dark-barred Twin-spot Carpet Xanthorhoe ferrugata is smaller (12 to 13mm) and paler in the outer area of the forewing.
Forewing: 14 to 16mm
Habitats: Damp deciduous woodland, carr, marshes, fens and damp scrub heathland.
Habits: The moth is occasionally disturbed from shrubs and tree trunks during the day. It flies from dusk and comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on bedstraws, Primrose, chickweeds, violets, docks and other low-growing plants. It pupates in loose soil.
On the European mainland it has been recorded feeding on Hedge Bedstraw, Common Sorrel, Hedge Woundwort, dead-nettles, Marsh Cinquefoil, Bilberry and Raspberry.
