Similar species: Ruddy Highflyer Hydriomena ruberata has dark longitudinal streaks and a short diagonal dash in the apex of the wing. July Highflyer Hydriomena furcata has only a prominent dark diagonal streak.

Forewing: 13 to 16mm

Habitats: Damp woodland, carr, river-banks and lake margins.

Habits: The moth is occasionally disturbed in the day. It is nocturnal and comes to light.

Foodplant: The nocturnal larva feeds on Alder. It hides between spun leaves during the day and pupates in the leaf litter, in loose soil or under loose bark.
