Local

Similar species: July Highflyer Hydriomena furcata has a prominent dark diagonal streak in the apex of the forewing. May Highflyer Hydriomena impluviata lacks the short diagonal dash found in Ruddy Highflyer, but does have the longitudinal streaks.

Forewing: 14 to 17mm

Habitats: Heathland, moorland, bogs, marshes, carr and open woodland.

Habits: The moth can be disturbed from sallow trunks during the day. It flies from dusk and comes to light.

Foodplant: The nocturnal larva feeds on Grey Willow, Eared Willow and other sallows, preferring the lowest growth. It hides between spun leaves during the day and pupates amongst moss or in the leaf litter.
