Similar species: This species is unlikely to be mistaken for other British or Irish moths.
Forewing: 12 to 16mm
Habitats: Deciduous woodland, parkland, scrub, hedgerows and gardens.
Habits: The moth is only occasionally disturbed in the day. It flies from dusk and comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on Hawthorn, Midland Hawthorn, Downy Birch, Blackthorn, Sweet Chestnut, Pendunculate Oak and other deciduous trees. It pupates in the leaf litter.
On the European mainland it has been recorded feeding on Silver Birch, Bird Cherry, Rowan, limes and Hazel.
