Geometridae

70.090 Chevron Eulithis testata (Linnaeus, 1761)

Common

Similar species: Northern Spinach Eulithis populata lacks the deep indentation to the inside of the wing bar and has a double projection on the outer edge rather than running straight from the leading edge to its widest point as in the Chevron. It also lacks the scattering of white scales usually present on the Chevron.

Forewing: 13 to 19mm

Habitats: Mountain moorland and grassland scrub. Low elevation heathland, dune slacks, marshes, fens and open woodland

Habits: The moth occasionally makes short flights in the afternoon in Scotland. It flies from dusk and after dark it can be found resting on Heather. It comes to light.

Foodplant: The larva feeds on the leaves of sallows, Creeping Willow, Heather, Aspen, probably other poplars, birches and Hazel. In the Hebrides it has been recorded on Rowan. It pupates between spun leaves on the foodplant.
