Similar species: Brown Scallop Philereme vetulata is larger (13 to 16mm) with a less prominent forewing spot and dashes along the leading edge of the forewing. It also has a different scallop pattern on the edge of the hindwing.

Forewing: 11 to 13mm

Habitats: Woodland carr, scrub margins, verges of droves and green lanes in marshes and fens, river margins, canal margins and old peat diggings.

Habits: The moth can be disturbed in the day by tapping bushes and vegetation near the foodplant. It flies at dusk and occasionally comes to light.

Foodplant: The larva feeds on the leaves and flowers of Yellow Loosestrife growing in shaded, sheltered sites. It pupates in a cocoon spun amongst the foodplant.
