Similar species: Currant Pug Eupithecia assimilata is smaller (9 to 12mm) with a darker reddish forewing with less distinct or absent cross-lines and more obvious white spots near the outer edge especially the larger spot in the trailing corner. Wormwood Pug Eupithecia absinthiata has a narrower reddish forewing, usually with less distinct or absent cross-lines and a more obvious white spot in the trailing corner.

Habitats: Woodland rides, woodland clearings, disused quarries and coastal scrub.
Habits: The moth is occasionally disturbed from the foodplant during the day. It flies from dusk and comes sparingly to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on the flowers of Goldenrod. It pupates in a cocoon in loose soil.
