Similar species: There is a form with a broader more diffused dark border, but even then this is a distinct species unlikely to be mistaken for other British or Irish moths.

Forewing: 12 to 13mm

Habitats: Wasteground and other disturbed ground, coastal sand-dunes, road verges and gardens.

Habits: The moth comes sparingly to light and is otherwise rarely seen.

Foodplant: The larva feeds nocturnally on the leaves of Mugwort, Wormwood, Southernwood or Yarrow. It pupates in loose soil.

On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on Wild Angelica and Tansy.
