Similar species: Grey Pug Eupithecia subfuscata has a broader forewing with a less white background colour, a more rounded leading edge and a larger central spot. Yarrow Pug Eupithecia millefoliata is larger (12 to 13mm) with a less white background colour and a larger central forewing spot.
Forewing: 10 to 12mm
Habitats: Calcareous downland, field margins, road verges, grassy clearings and broad rides in woodland, coastal land slips, drier parts of salt-marsh and sea-cliffs.
Habits: The moth is easily disturbed from grassland during the day. It flies from dusk and comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on the flowers of ragworts, hawk's-beards, Field Scabious, Wild Marjoram, Dark Mullein, St John's-worts, Spanish Catchfly, Flixweed and other herbaceous plants. It pupates in loose soil.
On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on Hogweed, Burnet Saxifrage, Goldenrod, knapweeds and Yarrow.
