Similar species: This moth is unlikely to be mistaken for any other British or Irish species.
Forewing: 16 to 19mm
Habitats: Deciduous woodland, parkland, scrub and gardens.
Habits: The moth comes to light and occasionally to sugar.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on Pedunculate Oak, other oaks, Downy Birch, Silver Birch or sallows and sometimes Beech or Sweet Chestnut. It pupates in the leaf litter.
On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on Elder, lime, Aspen, cherry, Wild Plum and Blackthorn.
