Similar species: Barred Red Hylaea fasciaria is superficially similar. It has a straighter leading edge to the forewing and a deeply curved inner edge and smoother, rounded outer edge to the cross-band. Banded Pine Carpet Pungeleria capreolaria is smaller, more grey-brown and has a central spot in the forewing and a streak at the tip.
Forewing: 17 to 19mm
Habitats: Ancient deciduous woodland, long established scrub on calcareous grassland and Hazel in limestone pavement.
Habits: The moth comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on Hazel and also sallows, Downy Birch, Silver Birch and Hawthorn.
On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on Alder, oaks and Brambles.
