Similar species: The bright yellow thorax and orange-brown, speckled wings are enough to distinguish this species from the other thorns although the yellow thorax can fade to buff.

Forewing: 16 to 20mm

Habitats: Woodland, parkland, scrub and gardens.

Habits: The moth comes to light.

Foodplant: The larva feeds on Silver Birch, Downy Birch, Alder, limes, Hornbeam, Goat Willow, other sallows and other deciduous trees. It pupates in the leaf litter.

On the European mainland it has been recorded feeding on oaks, elms, poplars and Hazel.
