70.242 Dusky Scalloped Oak Crocallis dardoinaria Donzel, 1840

Immigrant / Resident on the Channel Islands

Similar species: This species is variable in the shade and colour of the forewing, the shade and colour of the forewing bar and the amount of dark speckling across the forewing. Scalloped Hazel Odontopera bidentata has more deeply indented scallops around the outer edge of the wings. Scalloped Oak Crocallis elinguaria is generally more yellow/orange in colour and has a single (often elongated) spot in the forewing rather than a mark made up from four smaller spots. It also has less speckled forewings.

Forewing: 18 to 24mm

Habitats: Scrub.

Habits: The moth comes to light.

Foodplant: The early stages have not been recorded on Guernsey, Jersey and Alderney. On the European mainland the larva feeds on Gorse, Broom, Juniper and Cistus. It probably pupates in a cocoon in loose soil.
