Similar species: No other British or Irish moth is likely to be confused with this species.
Forewing: 22 to 30mm
Habitats: Woodland, parkland, scrub, hedgerows and gardens.
Habits: The moth is occasionally disturbed in the day. It flies from dusk and comes to light soon after.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Ivy, Wild Privet, Garden Privet, Black Currant, Goat Willow, Elder, Horse Chestnut, Canadian Goldenrod and other deciduous trees and shrubs. The larva pupates in a flimsy cocoon on the foodplant.
On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on Dogwood, Lilac, Traveller's-joy and Fly Honeysuckle.
