Similar species: Belted Beauty Lycia zonaria is similar, but it has dull orange bars between the abdominal segments rather than a broken orange-red line down the dorsal.
Forewing: 14 to 16mm
Habitats: Boggy moorland scrub or dry heathland with Bilberry and heathers.
Habits: Both sexes can be found during the day resting on fence posts, plant stems and rocks.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on Bog Myrtle, Bilberry, Eared Willow, Heather, Bell Heather or Cross-leaved Heath. In captivity it accepts Hawthorn, sallows and birches. It pupates in the soil, sometimes overwintering for several seasons.
