Local

Similar species: Grey Birch Aethalura punctulata is superficially similar but is greyer, with paler markings and the male lacks the feathered antennae. Its flight period is earlier, peaking in May (although they can overlap).

Forewing: 13 to 16mm

Habitats: Ancient deciduous woodlands, old coniferous woodlands and mature scrub.

Habits: The moth has twice been recorded nectaring at flowers during the day in a garden in Speyside. It comes to light.

Foodplant: The larva feeds on the young growth of Bearded Lichen and other lichens on Beech, Hawthorn and oaks. It pupates spun amongst the foodplant.

On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on the liverworts known as flapworts.
