Similar species: Pale Oak Beauty Hypomecis punctinalis is on average smaller (22 to 26mm), has an open central spot on the hindwing, has a pale area rather than dark bars on the underside of the wing tip and has narrower feathered antennae.

Habitats: Mainly ancient woodland with mature oaks.
Habits: The moth can sometimes be found during the day at rest on the trunks and branches of oaks. It comes to light and occasionally sugar.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on Pedunculate Oak. It pupates just below the soil surface.
On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on Hornbeam, Beech, birches and willows.
