Similar species: As long as care taken this moth is unlikely to be mistaken for any other British or Irish species.

Forewing: 17 to 20mm

Habitats: Ancient woodland and other deciduous woodland.

Habits: The moth is occasionally disturbed during the day from rest on tree trunks or the lower branches of trees. It comes to light.

Foodplant: The larva feeds on Pedunculate Oak and probably Sessile Oak, Silver Birch, Downy Birch, Hazel, Hawthorn, Midland Hawthorn, Sweet Chestnut and limes. It pupates in the soil.

On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on maples and Alder.
