Similar species: This moth always rests with its wings closed above the body like a butterfly. There are no similar British or Irish species.

Habitats: Pine woodland and plantations, other conifer plantations and conifer shelterbelts.
Habits: The moth flies around the branches of its foodplants during sunny weather often in large numbers. It comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds mainly on Scots Pine, but also Corsican Pine, Lodgepole Pine, Norway Spruce, larches and probably other conifers. It pupates in the needle litter or just below the soil surface.
