Similar species: There are no other British or Irish species that are likely to be mistaken for this moth.
Forewing: 15 to 20mm
Habitats: Lowland heaths, open woodland with heathy rides, moorland and bogs.
Habits: The moth is active in sunny weather and is easily disturbed in the day. It flies from dusk and comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on Heather, Bell Heather, Broom and Petty Whin. It has also been recorded feeding on the flowers of gorse and Blackthorn. It pupates in a cocoon attached to the foodplant.
