Common

Similar species: Feline Cerura erminea has large zig-zag markings across the forewing with dark ovals at the leading edge, rather than a wavy double bar. It also has an almost black dorsal to the abdomen rather than a black and grey barred dorsal.

Forewing: 29 to 38mm

Habitats: Open woodland, scrub, carr, hedgerows, moorland, heathland and gardens.

Habits: The moth comes sparingly to light.

Foodplant: The larva feeds mainly on the young and lower growth of Goat Willow, Grey Willow and Aspen. It also feeds on other willows and poplars. It pupates in a hard cocoon on the trunk of the tree, partially comprised of chewed bark or wood.
