Similar species: Lunar Marbled Brown Drymonia ruficornis has a solid dark-grey outer bar and a crescent shaped marking on the forewing. Both species have rare black forms.
Forewing: 17 to 20mm
Habitats: Mature oak woodland.
Habits: The moth can occasionally be found on oak trunks, but is more usually seen when it comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on mature Sessile Oak or Pedunculate Oak. It pupates in the soil.
On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on Beech and birches.
