Similar species: Large Dark Prominent Notodonta torva lacks the yellow and red markings. Three-humped Prominent Notodonta tritophus is on average larger (22 to 27mm) and paler with a yellowish band across the forewing.
Forewing: 18 to 24mm
Habitats: Deciduous woodland, carr, heathland, river-banks and gardens.
Habits: The moth comes sparingly to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on Silver Birch, Downy Birch or Alder and occasionally oaks or Hazel. It pupates in a cocoon under the soil.
