Similar species: Coxcomb Prominent Ptilodon capucina has a more scalloped edge to the forewing which lacks the large area of white scales along its outer edge.
Forewing: 15 to 20mm
Habitats: Deciduous woodland, parkland, scrub, hedgerows, amenity planting and gardens.
Habits: The moth comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on Field Maple and occasionally Sycamore or cultivated Acer spp. It pupates in a tough cocoon in the leaf litter, in moss on a tree trunk or in loose soil.
On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on oak and elms.
