Similar species: Chocolate-tip Clostera curtula has the chocolate area only outside of the outer cross-line of the forewing and lacks the two black spots in the trailing corner of the wing.

Forewing: 14 to 19mm

Habitats: Scrub on vegetated shingle. On the European mainland it is found in damp deciduous woodland, scrub and parkland.

Habits: The moth comes to light.

Foodplant: The nocturnal larva initially feeds gregariously on Grey Willow or other sallows, willows and poplars, including Aspen. Pupation takes place spun between leaves of the foodplant, which in the second brood fall into the leaf litter in the autumn.

On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on Alder.
