Similar species: This moth is unlikely to be mistaken for any other British or Irish species.
Forewing: 19 to 23mm
Habitats: Deciduous woodland, scrub, parkland, marshes, fens, damp heathland, sand-dune scrub and gardens.
Habits: The moth nectars at Ivy and other flowers and is attracted to sugar after dark. It comes sparingly to light. It is well known for its habit of overwintering in caves and cool dark tunnels.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on willows, Aspen and other poplars. It pupates in a cocoon spun between two leaves.
On the European mainland it has been recorded feeding on Goat Willow, Crack Willow and occasionally Rowan.
