Similar species: Shaded Broad-bar Scotopteryx chenopodiata is superficially similar, but does not have long palps or a zig-zag inner edge to the bar on the forewing.

Forewing: 15 to 19mm

Habitats: It inhabits nettle beds wherever they grow.

Habits: The moth is easily disturbed from nettles and the surrounding vegetation during the day. It flies from dusk when it nectars at flowers. It comes to sugar and to light.

Foodplant: The larva feeds at night on Common Nettle. It hides between spun leaves during the day. Pupation takes place between spun leaves on the foodplant.

On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on Hop, Elder, dead-nettles, woundworts and plantains.
