Erebidae

72.004 Buttoned Snout Hypena rostralis (Linnaeus, 1758)

Notable B

Similar species: The curved leading edge and in well marked specimens the bar between the oval spot and kidney mark separate this moth from other snouts.

Forewing: 13 to 15mm

Habitats: Abundant Hop in sunny locations, the margins of woodland rides and clearings, mature hedgerows, scrub and gardens.

Habits: The moth hibernates in caves, out-buildings and cellars. The moth does seem to be attracted to window light, but is scarce in moth-traps. It is also attracted to sugar, Ivy and over-ripe blackberries.

Foodplant: The larva feeds on Hop, including the cultivated Golden Hop. It pupates under a leaf of the foodplant.

On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on brambles and Common Nettle.
