Similar species: In fresh condition this moth is unlikely to be mistaken for other British or Irish moths. When worn and the purple has faded to brown it could be mistaken for Pyrausta despicata which has a more obvious kidney mark.
Forewing: 9 to 11mm
Habitats: Downland, unimproved calcareous grassland, open woodland rides, heathland, moorland and coastal sand-dunes.
Habits: The moth is easily disturbed and flies in sunshine. It also comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on Common Milkwort, Heath Milkwort and Lousewort and can be found resting on the foodplant during the day. It pupates in a tough cocoon in the leaf litter.
