Similar species: This moth is unlikely to be mistaken for any other British or Irish species.
Forewing: 41 to 50mm
Habitats: Deciduous woodland.
Habits: The moth is sometimes found at rest on tree trunks or walls during the day. It comes to sugar at dusk and later to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds at night on Aspen and other poplars. It pupates in a cocoon spun among leaves or in the leaf litter.
On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on Ash, oaks, birches and Alder and occasionally willows, beech and elms.
