Suspected immigrant
Similar species: This moth is larger than Oak Yellow Underwing Catocala nymphagoga (16 to 20mm). It looks similar to one of the crimson underwings but smaller and with a yellow hindwing. It is unlikely to be mistaken for any other British or Irish species, although there are several other similar moths on mainland Europe that also have yellow hindwings.
Forewing: 21 to 28mm
Habitats: In Europe it inhabits oak scrub and woodland edge and clearings in rocky areas. A mainly Mediterranean species, found from Italy and Greece to Spain, north to the southern alps. It has been recorded in Switzerland, Austria, France and Germany.
Habits: The moth comes to light. It was first recorded at Weymouth, Dorset on 25th June 2025.
Foodplant: The early stages have not been recorded in Britain. On the European mainland the larva feeds on Evergreen Oak, Kermes Oak Quercus coccifera and other oaks. It pupates between spun leaves.
