Immigrant recent colonist in the Channel Islands

Similar species: Red Underwing Catocala nupta is on average larger (33 to 49mm) and the forewing is browner and more marbled. The outer central cross-line does not travel inwards until two-thirds across the wing from the leading edge, rather than sharply inwards to the kidney mark.

Forewing: 33 to 39mm

Habitats: In central Europe it inhabits forested river valleys, carr and marshland.

Habits: The moth comes to sugar and sparingly to light.

Foodplant: The early stages have not been recorded in the wild in Britain. The larva feeds on willlows, sallows and poplars. It pupates spun between leaves.
