Similar species: If care is taken this moth is unlikely to be mistaken for any other British or Irish species.
Forewing: 13 to 15mm
Habitats: Rough grassland on downland, flower-rich meadows, calcareous grassland, embankments and open woodland rides.
Habits: The moth flies during the day and visits flowers, especially in late afternoon sunshine. It is easily disturbed at other times.
Foodplant: The larva feeds nocturnally on White Clover, Red Clover, Common Bird's-foot Trefoil, Black Medick, Lucerne, Tufted Vetch and other trefoils and vetches. It rests along a stem during the day. It pupates in a cocoon in the leaf litter.
On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on Meadow Vetchling, Horse-shoe Vetch and possibly sorrels and violets.
