Similar species: This moth is unlikely to be mistaken for any other British or Irish species.

Habitats: Damp deciduous woodland and scrub.
Habits: The moth comes to light and sugar.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on Alder, Downy Birch, oaks, Goat Willow, elms, Sycamore, Hawthorn and other deciduous trees. The larva rests on the upperside of a leaf. It pupates after burrowing into rotten wood.
On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on Hornbeam, wild roses and occasionally on Aspen, Beech, limes and Hazel.
