Similar species: Knot Grass Acronicta rumicis is usually smaller (16 to 20mm), has a grey-brown hindwing (rather than white or grey-white), has more defined forewing markings and a prominent white spot two-thirds along the trailing edge. The dark form of Sycamore Acronicta aceris is larger (18 to 22mm), less mottled and lacks the large pale patch to the outside of the kidney mark.
Forewing: 17 to 20mm
Habitats: Deciduous woodland, parkland, poplar plantations and gardens.
Habits: The moth is sometimes found during the day resting on tree trunks or fence posts. It nectars at flowers after dark and comes to light and sugar.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on Black Poplar, Aspen, White Poplar, Lombardy Poplar, other poplars and sometimes willows. It pupates in a flimsy cocoon in a bark crevice, under bark or in loose soil.
On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on Alder.
