Similar species: Marbled Coronet Hadena confusa is smaller (14 to 16mm), but superficially similar until the moths are seen side by side.
Forewing: 17 to 19mm
Habitats: Deciduous woodland, calcareous grassland scrub, marshes, fens, scattered Ash trees on grassland and gardens.
Habits: The moth comes to light and sugar.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on Ash, Wild Privet or sometimes Hazel and Alder. It pupates in a tough cocoon under moss on a tree trunk or in leaf litter.
On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on Lilac.
