Similar species: This moth is unlikely to be mistaken for any other British or Irish species.
Forewing: 20 to 24mm
Habitats: Mature birch woodland.
Habits: The moth comes to light in large numbers even at a temperature of only 2C. Very few moths enter the light trap, most land a distance away and walk towards the light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on Silver Birch and Downy Birch. It pupates in a cocoon under the soil, sometimes overwintering more than once.
On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on Aspen, poplars, willows, Bird Cherry, Alder Buckthorn, Fly Honeysuckle, Hazel, oaks, elms and limes.
