Noctuidae
73.096 Uncertain Hoplodrina octogenaria (Goeze, 1781)
Common
Similar species: Rustic Hoplodrina blanda is very similar and although there are a few differences, such as the size of the oval, grey-brown or red-brown forewing, solid or dotted outer central cross-line, prominence of central suffused cross-band, none of these work for every moth as both species are variable. For this reason it is advisable to check the genitalia of a few specimens in a locality to see whether one or both species are present.
Forewing: 14 to 16mm
Habitats: Woodlands, scrub, hedgerows, grassland, gardens and most other similar habitats.
Habits: The moth comes to light.
Foodplant: The polyphagous larva feeds on chickweeds, docks, Primrose, dead-nettles, plantains and other low growing plants.
On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on Wild Carrot, stitchworts and Orpine. It pupates in a tough soil-covered cocoon underground.
