Noctuidae
73.097 Rustic Hoplodrina blanda ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)
Common
Similar species: Uncertain Hoplodrina octogenaria is very similar and although there are a few differences such as the size of the oval, grey-brown or red-brown forewing, solid or dotted outer central cross-line, prominence of central suffused cross-band, none of these work for every moth as both species are variable. For this reason it is advisable to check the genitalia of a few specimens in a locality to see whether one or both species are present. Vine's Rustic Hoplodrina ambigua has a more angular, grey to darker warm-grey forewing with some light speckling and a faint central band.
Forewing: 13 to 16mm
Habitats: Woodlands, scrub, hedgerows, grassland, gardens and most other similar habitats.
Habits: The moth comes to light.
Foodplant: The polyphagous larva feeds on chickweeds, docks, Dandelion, plantains and other low growing plants. It pupates in a tough soil-covered cocoon underground.
On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on campions.
