Similar species: This moth is unlikely to be mistaken for any other British or Irish species.
Forewing: 16 to 19mm
Habitats: Open woodland, wooded bogs, upland moorland and marshes.
Habits: The moth comes to sugar and light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds on Bramble, Raspberry, sallows, Bilberry, Bearberry, Cowberry and other shrubs. In captivity it will accept Knotgrass. The full-fed larva overwinters in a silk-lined chamber under the soil where it pupates in the spring.
On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on willowherbs, sow-thistles, plantains, Heather, Bog Bilberry and birches.
