Similar species: Sandhill Rustic Luperina nickerlii has a smaller oval and the kidney mark has white markings. If recorded away from known sites check the genitalia. The rare immigrant Dumeril's Rustic Luperina dumerilii is on average smaller (11 to 16mm), has a more angular wing and an oblique elongated oval. To confirm check the genitalia.
Forewing: 14 to 18mm
Habitats: Calcareous grassland and other grasslands, sand-dunes, coastal cliffs, heathland, woodland rides and gardens.
Habits: The moth comes to light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds amongst the roots of Common Couch, Cock's-foot, fescues, Wheat and other cereals and grasses. It pupates in the soil amongst the roots.
