Common

Similar species: Bulrush Wainscot is the only similar sized resident wainscot (20 to 24mm), but that has three strongly marked lengthways veins and an outer cross-line of small black darts and black marks along the base of the fringe.

Forewing: 16 to 23mm

Habitats: The margins and drier parts of reed-beds and ditch margins where reeds are present.

Habits: The moth comes to light late at night and flies again at dawn. It is occasionally attracted to sugar. The female is often attracted to light well away from the nearest suitable habitat.

Foodplant: The larva feeds in the lower stem and roots of Common Reed. It pupates among the roots.
