Local

Similar species: The forewing varies from pale warm brown to very dark brown and is often plain with just a few streaks at the forewing base near the leading edge and two dark dots marking the outer edges of the kidney mark. Some specimens have these dark dots and some veins highlighted in white. Another form has the veins dark streaked along the outer central cross-line and the outer cross-line with a dark oval and kidney mark.

Forewing: 11 to 16mm

Habitats: Reed-beds, stands of reeds in marshes, the margins of ponds, ditches and rivers.

Habits: The moth flies amongst the foodplant at dusk. It comes sparingly to light.

Foodplant: The larva feeds inside the stems of Common Reed, changing stems as it grows. It pupates head up, low down in a stem of the foodplant.
