Similar species: The darker form of Dusky Brocade Apamea remissa is on average smaller (17 to 19mm), with more defined markings on a less silky forewing.

Habitats: Salt-marsh, brackish marshes, mudflats, estuaries, coastal marshy grassland, dune-slacks, broads, marshes and fens.
Habits: The moth visits coastal flowers such as rushes, marram and sea-campion. It comes to aphid dew, sugar and light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds at night on the roots and stem base of Common Saltmarsh-grass, Reflexed Saltmarsh-grass, Bulbous Meadow-grass or Red Fescue. During the day it hides amongst the grass roots or under stones. It pupates in a cavity under the soil.
