Similar species: This moth is unlikely to be mistaken for any other British or Irish species.
Forewing: 14 to 17mm
Habitats: Grassy clearings and rides in open woodland, downland scrub and coastal scrubby grassland.
Habits: The moth nectars at flowers and comes to sugar and light.
Foodplant: The larva feeds inside the stems and later on the leaves and flowers of False Brome, Wood Mellick, wood-rushes, Wood Meadow-grass and other woodland grasses. It pupates in a cocoon under the soil.
On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on Quaking Grass, Tufted Hair-grass and Wood Millet.
