Similar species: Dusky Brocade Apamea remissa has a reddish-brown rather than dark grey-brown forewing with a slightly curved leading edge and no scale tuft near the base. The kidney mark is about a third bigger than that of Confused.

Forewing: 16 to 19mm

Habitats: Mountain moorland, coastal sand-dunes and rocky coasts.

Habits: The moth comes to light and sugar.

Foodplant: The larva feeds on the roots and lower stems of Rough Meadow-grass, Wood Meadow-grass and other grasses. During the day it hides under the ground. It pupates under the soil without a cocoon.

On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on fescues, Wavy Hair-grass and Narrow Small-reed.
