Immigrant

Similar species: The red-brown form of Clouded-bordered Brindle Apamea crenata is smaller (18 to 22mm), with a forewing that is paler at the base, has a smaller elongated yellowish oval and a with a yellowish kidney mark. The Scarce Brindle has a kidney mark with a white outer edge.

Forewing: 19 to 24mm

Habitats: In Europe it inhabits grassy mountain moorland slopes and lowland heaths.

Habits: The moth comes to light.

Foodplant: The early stages have not been recorded in Britain. On the European mainland the larva feeds on the roots of Sheep's-fescue, Tufted hair-grass, Wavy hair-grass and other grasses. It pupates under the soil.
