Noctuidae

73.222 Dingy Shears Fissipunctia ypsillon ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)

Local

Similar species: If care is taken this moth is unlikely to be mistaken for any other British or Irish species.

Forewing: 15 to 19mm

Habitats: Damp deciduous woodland, damp scrub, marshes, fens and the margins of rivers and streams.

Habits: The moth comes sparingly to light and sugar.

Foodplant: The young larva feeds on the catkins of willows, sallows and poplars. When larger it feeds nocturnally on the leaves. During the day it hides under bark or in the leaf litter, which is also where it pupates.

On the European mainland it has also been recorded feeding on birches and Field Maple.
